k9 UNIT
Our highly trained K-9 police dogs assist officers in locating and arresting dangerous offenders, ensuring the safety of both officers and the community. With an incredible sense of smell, these K-9s can track scents and help apprehend suspects. They also assist in extreme emergency situations, reducing risks to officers and minimizing the use of deadly force where practical. Additionally, our K-9s are trained to find illegal drugs, locate weapons, and recover missing items left at crime scenes.
The unique bond between police officers and their canine partners is evident as these skilled dogs participate in community events, educational seminars, and demonstrations. The K-9 unit appreciates the community's support and is dedicated to enhancing public safety for Sherman residents, businesses, and visitors.
Currently, our K-9 Unit has one canine team: Officer Chad Johnson and his partner, Spy. Spy is trained in detecting narcotics, evidence, and persons, as well as providing handler protection. Each year, the police dog handler and Spy undergo several weeks of training. This training includes basic obedience and agility, scent tracking, area and building searches, and suspect apprehension. The handler learns to interpret Spy's behavior changes when locating persons, evidence, or contraband.
The K-9 Unit has proven to be a valuable asset to the Department.
