Citizen Police Academy

What is the Citizen Police Academy?

The Sherman Citizen Police Academy is an 8-week program that allows participants to become more acquainted with the Sherman Police Department. The interactive classes are taught by Sherman Police Officers who provide an accelerated overview of the various operations within the Sherman Police Department. Participants will walk away with a better understanding of who we are and what it is that we do.

Topics covered will include organizational structure, patrol operations, criminal investigations, Special Response Team, K-9 Unit, Critical Accident Investigations, Unmanned Aircraft Systems, State Law, policy, and use of force. Attendees will get hands-on experience working a mock crime scene, making use of force decisions during scenario training, and participating in a four to eight-hour ride-along with a Sherman patrol officer. Our main goal is to increase understanding of police work and to develop effective police/community partnerships.

Our next academy (Class #12) starts on September 19th, 2024. Classes will be held every Thursday evening from 6:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. at the Sherman Police Headquarters (2600 West Travis Street). The deadline to sign-up is September 9th, 2024.

Attendees must be at least 18 years of age and live, work, or attend school in Sherman. Attendees are required to pass a background check and have no criminal history (other than traffic tickets). You must sign the waiver of liability and make the commitment to attend the entire academy to graduate. To ensure a quality learning experience, the program is limited to a certain number of participants.

An application and waiver of liability for the CPA can be downloaded using the following links. Please submit both completed forms along with a photo-copy of your drivers license at 2600 West Travis Street or by email to brandonh@cityofsherman.com.
